Franklin Park Conservatory’s 2009 Expansion

The Results

The John F. Wolfe Palm House Expansion – Excellence in Construction Award Winning Project – Expansion included two 5,000 SF additions, containing a 130-seat special events venue, and back of house support areas for the conservatory’s special events staff which includes a serving kitchen. There are dressing rooms for clients, conference rooms and offices for the conservatory’s staff. The top of the additions feature rooftop gardens. The gardens can be accessed through the show house by a new glass elevator and monumental stair case.

Brides Garden – Terraced garden with a fountain used for smaller events.

Light Raiment II – A permanent lighting installation from James Turrell that illuminates the Palm House into a light display.

Community Gardens Stage I & II – Construction of a community garden center, education pavilion, and demonstration gardens. The community garden center sits on a 4-acre campus and is the center of the conservatory’s horticulture and environmental programs. The pavilion includes a summer kitchen, complete with public bathrooms, and the demonstration gardens are used for new outreach and education initiatives. A Berry House for growing berries and a Rose Pavilion in the Rose Garden was also constructed. The Caretakers House was renovated into offices, a meeting space and a library. This phase also featured a tool shed and an Apiary building.
