The Approach
Miles-McClellan Construction partnered with the Columbus Curling Club on a one-of-a-kind expansion to its facilities to grow the club, creating more room for competition, connection and community.
The project transformed the existing facility by adding a connected structure to house new locker rooms, event space and a warm-room lounge, while freeing up the original space to focus solely on the game. The expansion will also make room for a fourth sheet of ice, enabling the club to grow its membership by more than 30% and host larger events, including national-level tournaments.
Miles-McClellan was selected for the project based on longstanding relationships and a reputation for working on projects that require care, flexibility and creative delivery methods — all of which became vital as the project got underway.
The Process
The original scope for the project was to expand the curling club and fit out the new tenant space next door to house new locker rooms, event space, and a warm-room lounge, while freeing up the original space to focus solely on the game. Our team conducted a thorough value engineering process to make sure the project work stayed within the club’s budget.
However, a permitting issue raised budget concerns, so the team decided to reduce the scope and focus on the curling space — this would allow the club to stay within a revised budget and remain operational during the curling season. The Miles-McClellan and Columbus Curling Club teams worked hand in hand to revise the project plans, shifting gears quickly to update the design, resubmit permits, and restructure the scope to prioritize the curling space over the next-door addition.
Despite the challenge, we were committed to completing the work on time and within budget. The process of revising the scope delayed the start by 1-2 months, and thanks to our team’s care and creativity, lost time was kept to a minimum, and the completion date was only pushed by 1-2 weeks. Owner change orders outside of contingency were kept to a minimum (under 0.6% of contract value), and the project was completed one week before the club’s first tournament of the season.
The Proof
The willingness of both parties to work together to face this challenge head-on showcases Miles-McClellan’s dedication to building strong relationships with our clients while delivering excellence. This completed project will enable the club to grow its membership and host larger events, including national-level tournaments, and bring national attention to Central Ohio’s curling community.
“It’s not every day you get to build something this one-of-a-kind in Columbus. We’re excited to support a nonprofit that’s creating space for competition and the continued growth of a sport that’s gaining real momentum across the country.”
