How did you get into construction?
Half way through college, I had no idea what I wanted to do for a career. My only interests were wrestling and enjoying the freedoms that come along with college life. Fortunately, my coach (Coach Trujillo) was very wise. He grabbed me after practice and "gently" reminded me that I needed to be working toward a degree. After a long conversation about how I had no idea what I wanted to do, coach asked me what my Dad did for a living. I told him that my Dad was a general contractor.
Coach immediately told me about the "amazing" Construction Management Program at Purdue University. He was also sure to walk with me to the dean's office to enroll in the program. At the time, I didn't understand the leadership and wisdom in his "recommendation,” but I sure am thankful today! My role as one of the owner's of Miles-McClellan Construction involves strategic thinking and leadership. Both skills I learned through wrestling and Purdue University. Thank you Coach Trujillo!
Which project are you most proud of?
Miles-McClellan moved with our client into North Carolina. We were able to put in place $87 million in 18 months with no prior knowledge of the local market. On top of that we were able to keep $63,733,466 locally.
I'm also very proud of the two LEED Platinum projects that we have completed with Innovative Design (Haywood Creative Arts Center and Isaac Dickson Elementary School). Achieving LEED Platinum is not an easy task and takes great dedication, effort, and teamwork.
What do you like about Charlotte?
Charlotte is truly a world class city. There is always something to do — sports, music, culture, diversity, etc.
What is the best compliment anyone could give you?
While working on Nationwide Arena, a subcontractor acknowledged me for "doing what I said I would do, when I said I would do it."
What is the best advice you have ever received?
You don't get to pick the times your kids will open up and talk to you...your job is to be there and be ready when they choose to talk.
Where is the most interesting place you have traveled?
Some day I hope to have time to travel!
